Brendan Gawlowski Prospects Chat: 7/7/26

2:00
Brendan Gawlowski: Hello everybody

2:00
Brendan Gawlowski: Eric and I are working furiously a T100 update and all manner of draft coverage. He’s running point on most things draft but I’m hammering away at college pitchers and we’ll both be in Philly to cover proceedings.

2:01
Brendan Gawlowski: For now, let’s chat. My goal for today is to spend more time on guys who generally do not get asked about. Y’all can help with this, of course.

2:01
wiguy94: You asked me to check back in this week on Josiah Ragsdale and here I am.

2:01
Brendan Gawlowski: Good start!

2:02
Brendan Gawlowski: Stock way up. Good eye, measurable power is average, which is ahead of where it was in college and a good bit better than how it looked in his debut cameo last season.

2:02
Brendan Gawlowski: Open strider, low hands, which makes me wonder about plate coverage and high fastballs in the long run, hasn’t been an issue yet

2:03
Brendan Gawlowski: There’s a little Canzone in him in how he uses the ground to generate leverage and meaningful power, even though he’s not a real big guy

2:03
Brendan Gawlowski: I would guess he’s not going to grow into the same juice Canzone has these last couple years though.

2:03
Brendan Gawlowski: Interesting fourth outfield prospect, great draft and dev win for MIL

2:04
rainingmozzarella: The Arizona Republic wrote an article a few weeks ago saying the Dbacks have seen improvements in their pitching development. Have you noticed anything similar? Are there any pitchers you feel have made a noticeable jump?

2:06
Brendan Gawlowski: Maybe modestly. I don’t see any huge breakouts, but there are guys who are having good years. Sandro Santana out of the bullpen looks great. Aracena didn’t come cheap but he’s got a chance to start and should contribute meaningfully, good arm and a chance for a plus secondary. Curley’s a fun, boom/bust arm, and I have sources who like him a good bit. I’m encouraged that Ciprian has pitched well in Low-A, even absent much CH development.

2:06
Brendan Gawlowski: Part of the appeal of the AZ system over the winter was that they had SO MANY GUYS you’d figure one would make a big leap. We’re not there yet.

2:07
mopete12: Is Alfonsin Rosario starting to put it together? From 5/5 to 7/5 he is slashing .298/.382/.612 with a 11.1% BB rate and 28.5% K rate (25.5% the last month) for a 155 wRC+ and just turned 22. Has there been any noticeable difference in his chase rate or z-contact %? In general, I have almost zero hope for high K rate minor leaguer hitters in the Cleveland system, but he has my attention.

2:08
Brendan Gawlowski: I still see him as a flawed hitter with meaningful power. It’s encouraging that he’s making this work at Double-A, in the sense that I feel more confident he’ll get to the place we projected over the off-season.

2:08
Brendan Gawlowski: Good platoon/4th OF feels like the ceiling though.

2:08
philly: What’s the best part of eating a roast pork instead of a cheesesteak? The sandwich itself or the smug satisfaction that you’re not a tourist lemming?

2:09
Brendan Gawlowski: Is this something the locals do? I need advice on all things Philly, I’ve never been and I’m flying in tomorrow.

2:09
richwp01: I know there are too many draft questions, but can you weigh in on time to MLB? Roguh approximation:

2:09
Brendan Gawlowski: Lot of guys still debuting at 25 even with the minors contractions

2:09
Brendan Gawlowski: Oh, I see you asked a follow up about three guys

2:09
richwp01:

  • Roch, end of 2027 to get feet wet
  • Emerson, end of 2028
  • Lackey 2029 if he spends 2 years developing as catcher (Will Smith, Cal Raleigh, Adley Rutchsman, Drake Baldwin, Shea Langeliers all took 3 years in minors , Dingler 4.)
2:10
Brendan Gawlowski: Those all seem like reasonable baselines; we’ll know a lot more about each of them when they get to the minors.

2:10
betob: Who has more upside: Caden Scarborough or AJ Russell?

2:11
Brendan Gawlowski: In the rotation? Scarborough. Both could be nasty in relief if it comes to that. I’d rather have Caden overall.

2:11
Pinstripe Power: When do you start to consider kids as legitamate prospects who are performing well in the complex and DSL leagues? I know offense seems a bit supercharged, but the Yankees have a number of high performing offensive kids; Richard Matic, Wilberson De Pena, Juan Torres, Dexters Peralta, Isaias Castillo, Stiven Martinez, and Yostin Pena all with OPS near .900 and most hovering around the 1dot. Any of them guys to note moving forward?

2:12
Brendan Gawlowski: In the complexes, I care very little about their statistical production. Some of the numbers under the hood — contact rate, measurable power — are useful and help with the evaluation but I’m paying more attention to athleticism/tools/physical projection.

2:13
Brendan Gawlowski: We put a guy with a 75 wRC+ in the AZ complex last year on our T100 this offseason; at the same time, there are guys with a 150 wRC+ who won’t make the main section of their team lists.

2:13
Brendan Gawlowski: The quality of play is just so low, and it’s easy to inflate topline production by walking a ton, or notching base hits against bad defenses in a way that’s just not at all meaningful.

2:14
K’d Cavalli: How long does a helium prospect have to struggle at a new level before you cool on them? Thinking Devin Fitz-Gerald in AA, still a semi-SSS but it hasn’t looked great.

2:16
Brendan Gawlowski: Depends on the player and depends on what’s happening. In general, I’m of the mind to be very patient on guys with talent. Colson Montgomery looked awful at Triple-A for a year and then almost immediately posted 5 WAR in 150 big league games. Jordan Walker didn’t hit for three years but it was always in there.

2:17
Brendan Gawlowski: It’s been ugly for Fitz-Gerald in Double-A. It’s also 21 games for a 20 year old.

2:17
Brendan Gawlowski: Way too early to adjust your priors, whatever they may have been.

2:17
Ben Lederman: *Clicking Tongs together*

2:17
Brendan Gawlowski: Been a while since he was the main character…

2:18
twelvejones: Currently, the only big-leaguers I’d consider as an 80 glove are Bailey, Witt, PCA, and Rafaela. Would you agree with this assessment?

2:18
Brendan Gawlowski: Dingler looks pretty damn good

2:19
Ben Lederman: More seriously – seems like Jonah Tong is having a tougher year this year than last. Did he spike a good year last year out of luck/level? Are his mechanics out of whack this year? To no great surprise, the Mets have me more interested in future seasons given how they’ve played in ’26.

2:19
Brendan Gawlowski: I keep missing these follow ups, my apologies…

2:20
Brendan Gawlowski: The fringy command/lack of an E-W breaking ball has been exposed a little bit and he’s trying to develop a new pitch in real time, which is tough.

2:21
Brendan Gawlowski: Looking at his page, I see his extension is down this year, which is interesting. Don’t know if it’s relevant but seems like another thing to at least look at.

2:22
Jonathan Adelman: I’m very interested in the concept of deliberate practice (structured, goal-oriented training, requires more intense focus) as applied to various disciplines. What does deliberate practice look like in a baseball scouting context?

2:22
Brendan Gawlowski: As in, like, developing as a scout?

2:23
Brendan Gawlowski: If yes, start with one type of player, evaluate them, and check your evals against others. Ideally you have a master scout to compare notes with.

2:23
Big Fan: Owen Murphy didn’t get great results in his debut, but I thought he actually looked pretty good.  His fastball doesn’t have premium velo, but seems to generate awkward swings.  Do you have any updated thoughts on him since the Braves list came out?

2:24
Brendan Gawlowski: We’ve talked about him a fair bit in a T100 update context. He’s on the line there. The fastball should play even though the velo isn’t great. The trouble is that he doesn’t have a plus out pitch. Backend type seems right, could be a 3/4 at his peak, that would be the high end outcome and it wouldn’t shock me.

2:25
Big Fan: Any update on how your Braves system refresh is going?

2:25
Brendan Gawlowski: Toying around with it. I reserve the right to change my mind but in my head it looks something like this at the moment:

  1. Hartman 50/55 ^
  2. Southisene 50 ^
  3. Ritchie 50
  4. Fuentes 50 (grad)
  5. Caminiti 45+
  6. McKenzie 45+ ^
  7. Murphy 45+
  8. Sinnard 45
  9. Gil 40+
  10. Essenberg 40+
  11. Guanipa 40
  12. Lodise 40 v
2:26
Sadsox: What would be the equivalent prospect to a Comp pick? a T200 guy?

2:26
Brendan Gawlowski: You’re in the ballpark.

2:26
Brendan Gawlowski: Maybe a little below that, just due to lack of proximity?

2:29
Woody1937: What do you make of Won-Bin Chos start to AA? Level up or just a hot streak?

2:30
Brendan Gawlowski: Obviously an encouraging start. Can hit a fastball — including Kade Anderson’s, he went oppo on him last week, which is very impressive — but still struggling to adjust to secondaries. I have questions about his pitch recognition, he also looks barred in his swing, wish I had a side view to see if there was a little flexion there. Arrow up on the year.

2:31
JayGray007: When I mention the Pirates, what thoughts come to mind as far as how you’d evaluate what kind of operation they’re currently running?  top third of the league?  middle? bottom?  As detailed or general an answer as you’d like.

2:32
Brendan Gawlowski: It’s good. One of Ben’s legacies in PIT, win or lose, will be the steps forward most/all of the departments have taken under his watch.

2:33
Brendan Gawlowski: It’s not a coincidence that they’ve been competitive the first time he’s been allowed to run a top 20 payroll

2:36
Big Fan: I came across this Substack with a deep dive into Cam Caminiti’s new arm angle (https://tinyurl.com/4muwzj74).  He seems to found his footing over the last month.  What have you heard about him this year?

2:36
Brendan Gawlowski: I’m not really seeing the step forward

2:36
Brendan Gawlowski: I think it’s in there

2:37
Brendan Gawlowski: But coming into the year, we wanted to see similar production with more length… and he’s a tiny bit more stretched out but he’s not missing bats to the same degree

2:37
Brendan Gawlowski: And I don’t really think his slider looks better yet. It might get there eventually

2:37
Justin Krupp: I am intrigued by Trevor Cohen – 1:1 K/BB ratio, great speed, reports are he plays a strong CF. No pop, unheralded prospect, tell me the good news or the bad news on him from your perspective

2:38
Brendan Gawlowski: Well, the good news is that a lot of teams are apparently really intrigued. When I was doing the SFG list, it became apparent that the team gets a lot of calls on him.

2:39
Brendan Gawlowski: I see a contact-and-defense-oriented fourth OF with a pushy swing

2:39
Brendan Gawlowski: I’m guessing that teams see a path to get him more out front and lift to the pull side more often

2:40
Brendan Gawlowski: Wrote this in his blurb and think it holds up: “While his raw power is below average, he isn’t totally punchless, and his feel for contact suggests he could drive the ball a little more with a different approach. I’m not quite ready to project that, but things could get a lot more interesting here with a bit of a swing tweak.”

2:40
war2d2: I read your response to the Ragsdale question as “he’s got a little calzone in him” and now I want a calzone.

2:40
Brendan Gawlowski: Hungry typo

2:41
onemanwolfpack: I read somewhere that Laz Montes has very similar MiLB numbers to Nick Kurtz’s. This was comparing BB & K rates, as well as contact % figures (inside and outside the zone). Montes has higher K-rates but also higher BB-rates. Is it crazy that he just might make the TTO thing work in MLB – as Kurtz clearly has?

2:42
Brendan Gawlowski: I’m projecting he’ll make it work but Kurtz is the absolute ceiling of the attic for this skill set and wouldn’t expect Montes to replicate that kind of production.

2:43
Brendan Gawlowski: Kurtz’s big-league contact numbers aren’t good… and they’re better than what Montes was doing at AA

2:43
Niels-Henning Orsted Joc Pederson: Hey, BG.  Otto Lopez: annual batting title contender for the next 4-6 years, or a guy having his age-27 semi-fluky career year that he never comes close to matching again?

2:43
Brendan Gawlowski: The latter but I still think he’s good

2:43
drplantwrench: what probability Cadan Dana and Klassen ever making it to the big leagues again?

2:43
Brendan Gawlowski: Very high

2:44
Brendan Gawlowski: Klassen might be a tease in the long run but he’s going to get chances

2:45
Brendan Gawlowski: Caden Dana is 22

2:45
Brendan Gawlowski: Way too early to give up

2:45
rainingmozzarella: Baseball America wrote that Kayson Cunningham’s exit velo data is concerning. Do you have his average, 90th, and max, by chance? I thought he’d have average or so pop. And are you concerned?

2:46
Brendan Gawlowski: 90th is 100, max is 104, 27% hard hit rate. Well below average and in line where I had him in the offseason.

2:47
Brendan Gawlowski: He’s not a big guy, this is a hit tool only profile.

2:47
Brendan Gawlowski: It’s a good hit tool. Rough start to High-A, I don’t feel any worse about him than I did a month ago

2:50
bjsh44: What did you think of Volpe as a prospect? Do you think there’s any chance he’s fixable?

2:50
Brendan Gawlowski: Good glove, flawed hitter. He’s been around a 2-win player in the aggregate which feels about right.

2:51
filter2: Joe Dzierwa keeps doing it. Is he for real?

2:51
Brendan Gawlowski: I think the stuff is a little soft for more than a backend role. Really good body control for a guy his size. He’s in an org that can add velo, albeit often at a cost.

2:52
oaktownblues: Is it fair to give prospects sort of a mulligan on their first few months of an aggressive assignment? E.g. Breyson Guedez who struggled pretty hard initially in the Cal league but has been great in the last month or so

2:52
Brendan Gawlowski: It is fair, yes

2:52
Niels-Henning Orsted Joc Pederson: Hola, BG! For at least a couple of decades there were *three* distinct levels of pro ball in between the DSL and full-season Low-A ball. (For instance, for St. Louis farmhands there was the Gulf Coast League, the Appy above that, and the NY-Penn.) Now there is only the complex leagues in between the DSL and full season ball. So it sure seems like there would have to be *more* talent in those complex leagues than there used to be in any one or even two of those previous three levels. Could you clarify how it’s possible that the “quality of play is just so low” in the complex leagues? The math would seem to imply otherwise? Sorry if this seems accusatory, just trying to understand your point of view.

2:54
Brendan Gawlowski: The new roster rules incentivize teams to promote toolsy/athletic guys who can’t play in the hopes ahead of their station in the hopes that they develop baseball skills. A lot of the low quality stems from that.

2:55
Brendan Gawlowski: The quality of play in the rookie leagues wasn’t great either

2:57
Pinstripe Power: Any of those guys I mentioned guys on your radar with the under the hood stuff to back it up? Richard Matic, Wilberson De Pena, Juan Torres, Dexters Peralta, Isaias Castillo, Stiven Martinez, and Yostin Pen

2:59
Brendan Gawlowski: Matic, De Pena, and Martinez have vaugely encouraging data. The others less so. Again though, imo the scouting piece is more important at that age/level

2:59
Brendan Gawlowski: And that part is basically impossible for me to answer over a chat, unfortunately.

3:00
BirdsFan: Don’t go to tourist traps Geno’s or Pat’s .  I suggest Angelo’s Pizza in South Philly for cheesesteak, #1 in the country.  If you go Roast Pork go John’s Roast Pork, Porco’s, or High Street, all in South Philly, & make sure to roast pork with get aged provolone, spinach/broccoli rabe, & long hots if they have them.

3:00
Brendan Gawlowski: Thank you for the recommendations

3:00
ajexpress: What do you project for Adamczewski as a hitter in the MLB?

3:00
Brendan Gawlowski: Pretty similar to where we had him over the winter

3:00
Brendan Gawlowski: Also you guys are doing great on the “let’s talk about different guys” front

3:01
ajexpress: What’s the future hold for Wenninger? Does he crack the Mets (or any) big league rotation?

3:02
Brendan Gawlowski: He’ll get a shot. Stubbornly persistent control issues this year have delayed the timeline a bit.

3:02
Big Fan: I’m surprised to see John Gil at a 40.  Is it a lack of projected impact from his bat that’s holding him back?

3:02
Brendan Gawlowski: 40+ to be fair

3:02
Brendan Gawlowski: Power up, odds of sticking at SS down. Not an especially bendy lower half.

3:03
Ponopoly: Why do you think just about every scout thought Colson Montgomery would not be a good defender and he somehow appears to be?

3:03
Brendan Gawlowski: Great question. When I saw him in A-ball he was ~fine there but I just figured he’d get big and need to move off the position. I suspect most felt similarly. It appears we were correct about half of that.

3:05
ajexpress: Also, is Santucci getting a bump for you guys over any of these Mets pitching prospects underperforming this year?

3:05
Brendan Gawlowski: Not really. He’s walking guys too and he’s still barely throwing the change.

3:06
Brendan Gawlowski: I still like him, but it hasn’t been an arrow up season for a guy who already has a pretty big grade

3:06
Phillip Denny: Are there any mid-round arms in the 26 draft you’re high on? Maybe someone in the Schlitter (or earlier, Michael King) role that has pitchability and could really skyrocket with extra velo?

3:06
Brendan Gawlowski: I’m not far along but Jaxon Jelkin has me really intrigued

3:07
Brendan Gawlowski: Maxx Yehl is an interesting dev candidate on top of the whole “is this shit really gonna work?” question

3:07
Brendan Gawlowski: Which makes him fascinating

3:07
InsertWittyNameHere: Reading Nolan Ryan’s biography right now, do you think he would be sent immediately to the pen today?

3:07
Brendan Gawlowski: Hard to imagine him getting anywhere near the runway he needed. Randy too.

3:08
Woody1937: I know the Cubs don’t have a lot of room but is there really a benefit to bringing up Kevin Alcantara to give him 6 ABs a week?

3:08
Brendan Gawlowski: Maybe for the Cubs, not really for Alcantara

3:08
bjsh44: Do you see signs the Rockies are becoming a more ‘normal’ organization and improving their player dev?

3:09
Brendan Gawlowski: This is a great article idea

3:10
mopete12: Who do you think is more likely to be an MLB catcher, Cooper Ingle or Kody Huff?

3:11
Brendan Gawlowski: Ingle is in a tough spot to catch. The Guardos just traded for Bailey, he’s not great back there, and it’s hard to imagine Cleveland dealing him imminently.

3:11
Brendan Gawlowski: Huff doesn’t have the same offensive upside, so his odds of getting there in some kind of reserve role seem higher

3:12
BuccoFan: Could Seth Hernandez earn a late season call up if the Pirates are in it and need bullpen help?

3:12
Brendan Gawlowski: I would be surprised.

3:13
rossredcay: TGA hasn’t been at his finest the last month or so.  Any read on what’s going on there?

3:13
Brendan Gawlowski: Can turn into a thrower at times

3:13
Brendan Gawlowski: Still on him, not ready to bump to the 100 yet though

3:14
InsertWittyNameHere: Knowing how much easier it is to improve pitchers with today’s technology, and knowing how injury prone pitchers are, is velo less important to high school kids? Follow up, what traits are becoming more important to see in the youths these days?

3:14
Brendan Gawlowski: Maybe a little bit, kind of depends on where they are physically.

3:15
Brendan Gawlowski: Arm strength still matters a lot. So does your ability to spin the ball, your frame and athleticism, your aptitude/makeup.

3:15
Brendan Gawlowski: What matters less to me than ever is how your pitches actually look as a teenager.

3:16
Brendan Gawlowski: They’re going to look different as an adult, it’s totally fine if they’re inconsistent/not optimized in high school

3:17
rainingmozzarella: Just to follow up on the Diamondbacks pitching development question. Do you see any signs of improvement from David Hagaman?

3:17
Brendan Gawlowski: Tracking along from the winter report, saw him recently, no real update to note.

3:18
Brendan Gawlowski: Velo dropped off fairly early, that was maybe the biggest concern of the night

3:18
glenb0828: Hi Brendan, what are the chances we see any of these prospects get called up in the 2nd half? Made, M. Clark, De Vries, De Paula, F. Arias, K. Anderson.

3:18
Brendan Gawlowski: Clark almost certainly. Anderson and Arias likely. The others would surprise me more but it’s not insane.

3:19
Baby Yoda: For guys who are young for their year – how do you tell the difference between “way better than their peers” and “just took a leap early”? Thinking about all those 5-star football prospects who dominated in HS because they maxed out to D-I linebacker when they were 15.

3:19
Brendan Gawlowski: Trying to assess if a someone is an early mature guy is a big part of the eval

3:19
Brendan Gawlowski: If a guy is dominating and has clear physical projection left, you’ve really got something

3:20
rossredcay: What do you make of Blaine Bullard’s debut so far?  Sounded like a hit tool guy coming in with minimal power, showed some pop out of the gate, but with more swing and miss.  Now seems to be trying to find the happy medium for both.  Is that an accurate interpretation?  Think this is a guy who can find a way to impact the ball without completely compromising the hit tool?

3:20
Brendan Gawlowski: High school switch hitter who skipped the complex, so there’s a lot of factors that make a cautious, patient approach prudent here.

3:21
Brendan Gawlowski: That said, the power is still pretty light and he’s a sub-70% contact guy

3:22
Brendan Gawlowski: See some positive, some negative in his approach.

3:22
Brendan Gawlowski: He’s probably going to hover right where he is on the Jays update, this summer and next year

3:23
rainingmozzarella: As a Diamondbacks fan, I’m just frustrated by this whole year. It took Hazen 9 years to figure out that the pitching dev sucks, which all fans already knew. Highly paid pitchers aren’t working out. The hitting dev magic of the first several years of Hazen’s tenure seems to have dissipated with poor results from 2021-2023 drafts. The international signees have delivered subpar results over the past decade. And now the team will probably be sellers for the second straight year. Please give me something to look forward to!

3:25
Brendan Gawlowski: I don’t disagree with a whole lot of that. You’re in a sneaky tough spot. It’s probably not quite as daunting as Baltimore in the AL East but similar terrain. Fascinating “should we blow it up?” case.

3:26
Brendan Gawlowski: something to look forward to: You get to see Corbin Carroll’s prime. What a fun player, and what a great park for what he does. Enjoy that.

3:27
Phillip Denny: When a very high draft pick busts (I’m talking the Mark Appel, Brady Aiken, and Elijah Greens of the world), do you consider it more of a scouting miss, development miss, or merely the chaos inherent to the game we love simply exerting its will on a team and player?

3:27
Brendan Gawlowski: Case by case

3:28
jazzrunner12: How close is Nelson Rada?  He is at AAA and not drowning.  He seems to be a similar profile to Chandler Simpson with less speed and a touch more pop.   How do you think he will handle major league pitching? Who are good career comps?

3:28
Brendan Gawlowski: Better defender than Simpson, too. Quality fourth OF/second division guy who plays a long time and accumulates 9.8 WAR

3:28
Ragbrai: Do you think Waldschmidt was promoted too soon? Doesn’t look like he will have an impact this year. Will he in ‘27?

3:29
Brendan Gawlowski: No, I don’t, he just didn’t hit. We’ll see how it looks in round two.

3:30
ajexpress: Does the clock for minor league pitchers hitting the big leagues for the angels change with the new front office regime? And what do you think about Trey Gregory Alford?

3:31
Brendan Gawlowski: They have been promoting at a much more gradual pace this year. I’d expect that to continue.

3:34
John Gibbons: Is Boston Smith a legitimate prospect for the White Sox? He was a bit old for A+ but in a very SSS, he is not overwhelmed by AA.

3:34
Brendan Gawlowski: He’s a prospect, swing and miss is really scary

3:34
tylerjpetrie: When Bryce Eldridge debuted, there was (and still is) concern about his K rate. I’ve tried watching every AB of his this season, and he seems to make great decisions taking pitches that are maybe ~6 inches or less below the strike zone, but when pitchers throw him offspeed stuff lower than that (like Gausman last night) it feels like he swings and missed almost every time. Is this something that you think he can iron out as he develops or will it always be a part of his game?

3:34
Brendan Gawlowski: This could get better

3:35
John Church: How long would it even take to know whether an org’s pitcher development or player development has improved?  Like, for the Angels, what would signs of success be that Mozeliak and whoever follows him have started to turn things around?

3:35
Brendan Gawlowski: There are a lot of things to look for. One I’ll be watching very closely next week is what kind of pitchers they draft. Are they still prioritizing high velo, bad shape arms?

3:36
Niels-Henning Orsted Joc Pederson: Thanks for chatting, BG. Dominican Summer League OPS is up over 50 points — and nearly 100 points(!) from two years ago. Are “juiceballs” being used everywhere now? Also, are the Fangraphs wRC+ numbers for minor leaguers actually ballpark-adjusted, like with MLB? I know they didn’t used to be. Thanks again!

3:37
Brendan Gawlowski: Not in Triple-A.

3:37
Brendan Gawlowski: As for wRC+ not park adjusted, I erred in a chat earlier this year.

3:37
Johnny5Alive: Lara showed a bit more, and perhaps, unexpected power this year in minors.  Does this change his projections? What do you expect with this current call up?

3:37
Brendan Gawlowski: We talked about him yesterday, we’re going to hang on to our offseason report

3:38
canderson20: Without giving too much away, do you have a favorite re-eval for the T100 update?

3:38
Brendan Gawlowski: A few of our picks to click are, indeed, clicking

3:38
Brendan Gawlowski: Particularly guys with surnames that rhyme with Balvarez

3:39
misteroctober: i know t100 is WIP but do you feel these 3 pitchers all rise about the same amount? dzierwa (balt), jking (jays), mckennzie (braves)? is there much difference in upside in that group like maybe one one has SP2 type upside? appreciate your work, thank you.

3:39
Brendan Gawlowski: Dzierwa was just eval’d, I agree with Eric’s assessment of him.

3:40
Brendan Gawlowski: King I want to see more strikes, he’s having a solid year but holding pattern on his eval

3:40
Brendan Gawlowski: McKenzie, I’m encouraged. Hasn’t thrown a ton but I’ve liked what he’s put on tape. Looks a little bigger, throwing a little harder. Needed it.

3:40
Josh: I’m curious if there are any guys or type of guys that you like but have very little chance of making the majors. I’m thinking the good college qb that has no chance to be an nfl starter type guy

3:41
Brendan Gawlowski: Strike throwers with 20 or 30 velo

3:41
Person: is there any contemporaneous data that can evidence a player’s chances at being a 70+ in 3 years, or does it just happen

3:41
Brendan Gawlowski: The guys toward the top of the list, generally, have the best chance of doing that

3:41
Brendan Gawlowski: Some of the 40+ Dominican signees as well

opifijikl: I was looking through old photos on my phone and saw I went to a NH Fishercats vs Bham Rumble Ponies game where Tebow (and Alonso) were playing vs Vlad, Bo, Cavan, Gurriel, and Breslow(!). My question is, did you write up a prospect report for Tebow back in the day, or did someone need to? As a follow-up, were there any old scouting reports in the system that you dug up or found interesting for one reason or another? For example, trying to find the original Mike Trout draft scouting report in the PIT system.

3:43
Brendan Gawlowski: I did not write up Tebow, though I did see him once in the AFL. Org with power.

3:44
Brendan Gawlowski: As for old reports, I loved reading those when I was with PIT. My favorite was one on Jimmy Glowenke and I’m going to leave it right there.

3:45
canderson20: “Strike throwers with 20 or 30 velo” I hope Tom Eshelman is doing well, wherever he’s at

3:45
Brendan Gawlowski: Shout out to Jorge Marcheco

3:46
Big Fan: Did you find any common threads on what helped Braves hitters take a step forward this year?

3:46
Brendan Gawlowski: No, which is actually an encouraging answer

3:46
Nils: Owen Carey (in Atl system) still a 40+?

3:46
Brendan Gawlowski: Yep

3:46
Phillip Denny: I know you shouldn’t draft for need specifically, but at what point does a team like Baltimore look around and say “boy do we need some pitchers” or a team like KC look at their OF and say “this hasn’t been a strong positional ground since 2016”?

3:47
Brendan Gawlowski: It’s rare. The Mariners scouting director answered a version of this on a recent telecast. Occasionally it can break a tie.

3:48
John Church: How much do you view a scout’s role as accurately predicting how successful a player will be, as opposed to highlighting areas of strength and weakness at a point in time?

3:49
Brendan Gawlowski: It’s a good question. The younger and further away they are, the more the value in highlighting attributes and paths forward

3:49
Brendan Gawlowski: For 18 year olds on the complex, the right answer is going to be “org” the vast majority of the time

3:49
Brendan Gawlowski: We all know that

3:49
Brendan Gawlowski: The value is finding the guys with a chance to not be orgs

3:50
apeloton: Any thoughts on how keys has looked since his call up? Really rocketed through the system this year including not missing a beat at aaa but obviously not the strongest start in the bigs

3:51
Brendan Gawlowski: Only seven games. The big leagues are hard. He smacks the shit out of it when he makes contact.

3:52
Brendan Gawlowski: I don’t think I’d change the tool grades much at this point. The topline FV would tick up to account for proximity and production at the upper levels

3:52
Nils: Which C do you prefer long term, Franklin Primera or Juan Flores?

3:52
Brendan Gawlowski: Flores

3:54
Brendan Gawlowski: I’m going to shut it down here today. Thanks for all the questions, and I think we succeeded in the goal of spreading the attention on guys we don’t normally hit.

3:54
Brendan Gawlowski: I appreciate that.

3:55
Brendan Gawlowski: Take care and see you next week.
